Bugatti set the template for hypercars when it first unveiled the groundbreaking Veyron many years back. It was a Eureka moment for the automobile and stretching the boundaries of what can be possible from an object having four wheels and an engine. Then Bugatti launched the Veyron Super Sport-a lightweight version replete with the singular focus of attaining more speed along with a more intimate driving experience. It was harder, faster, and more involving Veyron.
Now, Bugatti has done the same with its Chiron Pur Sport, and this $3.6 million-plus hypercar has now entered a new stratosphere with its glorious power train and its insatiable appetite for speed.
Speed has always been one of our endless pursuits and we can never have enough of it. In the Chiron Pur Sport, it is less of an engine and more of a nuclear power plant with the 8.0-liter W16 engine been wound up to generate an astonishing 1,500 horsepower and 1,600-newton meters of torque. Compared to the standard Chiron, the top speed is limited to, ahem, 350 km/h due to the increased downforce being generated by the new rear spoiler but it is actually much faster.
The Pur Sport has a new transmission as well with a set of closer stacked ratios enabling for a more dramatic driving experience. The engine revs more and till 6,900 rpm- surreal for an engine dripping with turbocharging technology. To put it into perspective, the Chiron Pur Sport accelerates from 60 to 120 km/h almost two seconds faster than the already lightning-fast Chiron.
The Pur Sport also takes the regular Chiron and puts it into a grueling diet. Plus you get chassis and suspension upgrades with a firmer set-up enabling even better handling and overall dynamics. It gets new lightweight wheels and titanium brake pad base panels which further trim the weight down. Incredibly, the Chiron Pur Sport gets a new Sport + drive mode where it indulges the driver with the ability to drift around corners. That said, it remains to be seen whether owners would actually drift their multi-million dollar Chiron Pur Sport.
With so much power, tire technology needs to also play catch up and here, Bugatti and Michelin have developed a new and exclusive Bugatti Sport Cup 2 R tire for this car. The raw and visceral driving experience is also conveyed well by the styling of the car. It looks a lot more special and even more otherworldly in Pur Sport guise rather than a “standard” Chiron. There are wider air inlets plus an enlarged horseshoe grille while the entire bottom third of the vehicle features exposed carbon fiber. Elsewhere, you get a bigger rear spoiler, a huge diffuser, and an exhaust tailpipe made of 3D-printed titanium.
Inside, you get a beautifully finished but stark cabin finished in Alcantara and the focus here is only in the act of driving the car. Anything else is a distraction and has been thrown out. With a production run of only 60 units, the Chiron Pur Sport is a Bugatti for the keen driver and also with an edgy driving experience. Which, when mixed with such outrageous power is a potent cocktail that would only be savored by a select few of the wealthiest petrol heads of this planet.
