1. Use natural material

To recreate the look, you’ll need to use a lot of this material. The look of wood is warm and comforting so look for Italian furniture made with a lot of wood accents. Shelving made out of wood is also going to help with the look and feel. Wherever you can putting some wood to add an accent is important. 

Other accents can be made out of stone as well. But, if you don’t have some terracotta items then you will certainly feel them missing. Look for a rustic vase to fill some negative space made from terra cotta or other natural materials, for example. 

2. Let the light in

Another element that is essential in the Mediterranean look is light. You surely noticed how bright and airy the houses were inside when you traveled there. Make sure to let the natural light in as much as possible. 

If you are designing a custom-built house then make sure to add plenty of big windows that face south so you can let all that light in. Otherwise, look to take down some walls in your current home to open up the space and make it airier. This will allow light from windows to travel through the entire space. 

3. Get the colors right

There is not a single color scheme that works across all the Mediterranean cultures. For instance, in Greece, the predominant colors are white and blue. However, in Tuscany in Italy, you’re going to find more rustic reds and muted colors. 

When it comes to your color scheme you will have to decide on a certain area of the Mediterranean to focus on so you have the right colors to match the rest of the decorations. 

You definitely won’t go wrong with using a lot of white as it will help you achieve a brightness that’s important. But pick accents based on the particular country you are trying to emulate.
